Future Trends
Future Trends sometimes referred to as Labour Market Information (LMI) provides young people with an extra level of information that is a necessity to make informed career choices.
LMI helps young people refer to any relevant information about the current state of the jobs market and can therefore include:
- The industries and businesses that operate in a certain location.
- The types of jobs that exist and what they involve.
- How many of those jobs there are.
- The skills that are currently or will be in high demand.
- Commute and travel to work patterns.
- Typical rates of pay.
- Career progression opportunities.
Get Started
With new industries emerging or continuing to evolve, many of the most important jobs of the future don’t yet exist. This makes LMI particularly important to our young people as it provides information about what kind of jobs will be on offer when they are leaving school, as well as predicting possible future demand. The growth sectors for the UK include:
- Engineering and Manufacturing
- Digital Technologies (IT)
- Creative Industries
- Hospitality
- Social Care
- Healthcare
- Construction
- Logistics and Transport
In a recent government report, the top five skills for getting better jobs were also identified:
1. Communication skills: verbal and written communication
2. Digital and data skills: interacting with computers, processing, and analysing information, and making decisions and problem solving.
3. Application of knowledge skills: critical thinking, inductive and deductive reasoning, and information ordering.
4. People skills: relationship management, including establishing relationships, and training others.
5. Mental processes: thinking creatively, problem sensitivity, and self-reflection.
