Profile
I attended the Manor Secondary Modern School for girls because I failed my 11 plus. Unfortunately for many reasons , I also did badly in my GCEs so couldn’t go on to do A levels. I did a shorthand and typing course and became a medical secretary . I left to have my children and when I was in my thirties I discovered a short return study course and did an English degree followed by a Masters degree. My husband and I then opened a delicatessen and after 4 years he decided to ho back to college. So became a trainer working with young disadvantaged people. When the lottery started I joined the Community Fund which gave out the money to charitable organisations. I led a team working to give out the money to charities (about £23 million a year ). After 9 years I moved onto economic development - helping businesses across the east of England . My last role was as CEO of the Arthur Rank Hospice . During the 9 years I was there I was responsible for the building of the new hospice, increasing the number of staff and patients we could help and raising the funds to build it. I retired after 9 years .
Advice to students
I strongly believe in apprenticeships and in all of my roles I have ensured we employed apprentices. I am also a Governor at CRC where we are very proud of our apprenticeship offering.
