School: Sawtry Village Academy

Employer: Cambridge Regional College

Job Title: PR & Communications Officer

Qualifications:

  • BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism
  • MA Sports Journalism

Profile

Since leaving school, I went on to study a BA (Hons) in Broadcast Journalism at De Montfort and an MA in Sports Journalism at Lincoln.

It wasn’t what I set out to do - in fact, I started doing International Business at NTU, but dropped out after a term. It wasn’t right for me - and nobody should be afraid to make those decisions.

Doing Broadcast Journalism I was able to travel to Tokyo and Vancouver - some great opportunities to see the world and learn in other cultures.

I’ve worked as a journalist in the bus and coach sector, social media and marketing for an aviation museum, assistant editor on the world’s largest selling commercial aviation magazine, acting editor on an aviation website, and currently I’m the PR & Communications Officer for Cambridge Regional College (but if Sawtry asked me to be theirs I’d be there in a heartbeat!).

Advice to students

If you know what you want to do in life, fantastic - you’re already halfway there, and you’ll fight to make those dreams become a reality.

If you’re not yet sure, don’t worry about it. Find something you enjoy, and see if there’s a career path in it.

I didn’t think I’d end up working in education, but here I am and I love it. Sometimes the best things in life take you by surprise.

Above all else though enjoy life. You’re at a great age now to still have fun. Take things in your stride, travel and see the world, but just remind yourself of your goal that keeps you getting out of bed in the morning.
